DRAFT Disability Action Plan 2027-2030

Project Overview

Phillip Island Nature Parks is committed to being an inclusive organisation that values equity, diversity and fairness for our staff, volunteers, visitors, partners and our community.

We want this Disability Action Plan (DAP) to build on the solid foundation set through the implementation of the Accessibility Action Plan 2021-2025. We need our staff, volunteers, community, industry partners and visitors to support and challenge us as we strive to mature and advance disability action initiatives across our organisation.

The DAP is being developed to align with the four outcomes set out in the Victorian Disability Act 2006:

  1. Reducing barriers to people with disability in accessing goods, services and facilities.
  2. Reducing barriers to people with disability in obtaining and maintaining employment.
  3. Promoting inclusion and participation of people with disability in the community.
  4. Achieving tangible changes in attitudes and practices which discriminate against people with disability.

We are committed to developing priorites and actions under the three pillars of:

  1. Universal design, accessible information and communication
  2. Nature based health and wellbeing
  3. Leadership, culture and employment

We want to engage with community members with lived experience and their carers and families and service industry providers to ensure their aspirations are grounded in the actions and commitments in the DAP.

How to get involved

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU

Phillip Island Nature Parks wants to hear about your expeirences with the Nature Parks.

Your feedback will help shape our next Disability Action Plan to ensure it meets the needs, rights and goals of people with disability.

Specifically, we want to hear from:

  • people with disability
  • Autistic people
  • families, carers and advocates
  • friends and allies
  • organisations that support people with disability
  • community organisations that support people with disability
  • local government

We want to hear about:

  • what works well
  • what needs to be improved
  • what should we prioritise in the future
  • what new ideas you have for this plan

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

We will use this platform to udertake the engagement and the engagement program will be undertaken in two stages:

Stage 1 - data and information collection to inform the draft plan

Stage 2 - direct feedback on the Draft Disability Action Plan

People can choose to participate in multiple ways.

  • You can take part in an in-person forum
  • You can take part in an online forum
  • You can complete an online survey
  • You can talk to us at a local market
  • You can talk to us in person at one of our attractions
  • You can send your feedback in an email or voice recording to community@penguins.org.au
  • You can mail us a picture of your ideas to PO Box 97, Cowes VIC 3922
  • Tell us about your experience with Phillip Island Nature Parks

This survey takes around 10 minutes to complete.

The survey will help us gather data and information that we can use to write a draft Disability Action Plan. Your input will help us to understand the challenges and barriers that people with disability have when visiting Nature Parks.

Once we have a draft Disability Action Plan developed, we will share it with you and ask for further feedback to make sure the actions align with the needs and aspirations of all people.

The Nature Parks completed its first Accessibility Action Plan in 2025 and has since been working on developing a Disability Action Plan 2027-2030 and the timeline for this process is below.

  • Accessibility Audit Review

A review and analysis of the Accessibility Audit Report undertaken in 2020 was undertaken to inform future business planning.

  • Review of Accessibility Action Plan

A review of the actions and achievements in the Accessibility Action Plan (AAP) 2021-2025 was completed to inform what commitments would be stopped, continued or modified in the new plan.

  • Consultation with Managers

Consultation with Managers on the review of AAP 2021-2025 and Audit Review Report was undertaken.

  • Community data and information collection

We will invite visitors, community members, service providers and tour operators to share their expeirences with us so we can consider their needs, aspirations and challenges in the draft plan.

  • Draft Disability Action Plan is developed
  • Community, industry and service provider engagement

Once we have a Draft Disability Action Plan we will undertake consultation activities with community members with lived experience, their carers and families, service industry providers and tour operators to seek feedback on the draft.
